Your vehicle's cooling system regulates engine temperature and helps prevent overheating. Depending on the vehicle, the system may include the radiator, thermostat, water pump, electric or mechanical cooling fans, hoses, coolant passages and heater-core components.

Coolant absorbs heat as it circulates through the engine. That heated coolant travels to the radiator where heat is transferred away before the coolant circulates back through the engine.

Cooling-system problems can lead to overheating, coolant loss, insufficient cabin heat or engine-temperature fluctuations. If your temperature gauge is running hotter than normal or you notice coolant leaking, have the system inspected before continuing to operate the vehicle for an extended period.

Your battery, starter and charging system work together every time you start the vehicle. The battery provides electrical energy to the starting system, while the starter motor turns the engine so combustion can begin.

Once the engine is running, the alternator supplies electrical power to the vehicle and helps maintain the battery's charge. A problem with any part of this system may cause slow cranking, intermittent starting, warning lights or a vehicle that will not start at all.
